I am one who always wants to have some type of dessert after a meal and/or in the evening close to bedtime. What I have taken to doing recently is when one of these sweet cravings hits me and simple resistance doesn't seem to work, I first make myself eat a full piece of fruit (i.e. an apple, banana, clemtine, grapefruit half, etc.) or else a cup of small fruits (grapes, strawberries, etc.). An apple is a good choice because it takes a while to eat and is fairly filling.
If after eating this "good for me" sweet I STILL want a dessert, I will let myself have something. However, I often find that the fruit does the trick and I don't need anything more or, at the very least, a very small piece of dessert. A small piece of dark chocolate is always a good choice (it DOES have healthy qualities) and really hits the spot. (Another good dessert option is the banana/chocolate/peanut dessert I posted about last week HERE.)

This is a great idea. My candy cravings hit me hard in the afternoons. Apples or a tall glass of water usually work for me too :)
ReplyDeleteYour idea makes a lot of sense! At the very least, you're adding another fruit to your daily diet and you know what they say about eating enough fruits and vegetables!
ReplyDeleteFor me, it's salty stuff. I think I'll have to follow your lead and munch or carrots or celery (with a little salt) to fight the urge to attack a bag of Fritos.
I have a terrible sweet tooth! Lately, I've found a way to enjoy a sweet treat that's not too high in calories and is fat free:
ReplyDeleteI take a couple of marachino cherries and top with a tablespoon of Hershey's syrup! Just enough to take the edge off without the feeling of being deprived!
Ooohhh....that sounds yummy! I'll have to try it.
