I hate the ultra-harsh chemicals found in drain cleaners. They and oven cleaners are probably right at the top of the list of the most severe household chemicals. If you're looking for a much safer (both for your family AND the environment) way to clear your drains, try this.
Run water in the offending sink or tub until it becomes hot. Then pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain. Follow immediately with 1 cup of white vinegar. Let this sit for about 5 minutes (it will naturally foam up/bubble). Then turn the hot water back on and let run for a minute.
This should clear out most clogs. If it's really tough, try to repeat. If your clog is really compacted hair, your best bet will probably be to use a mini-snake. I have used the FlexiSnake which works great and you can also buy a similar product at Walgreens.

Awesome idea. I'm going to remember this as I don't like to use those harsh cleaners either.
ReplyDeleteI use this solution all the time. I love how it fizzles when you add the vinegar! It works. Actually, I am off the clean the bathroom.
ReplyDeleteMy teenage daughter clogs the sink with her hair care products. I'm going to show her this and have her do it regularly. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat tip! Thanks. I need to do this in our bathroom shower.
ReplyDeleteThis really does work great--not only is it good for the home/environment...but a WHOLE lot cheaper too! We try and do it every couple of months or so! Thanks for sharing!
